Bring in Grace with Art

When we allow ourselves to be a conduit for creativity, we open ourselves to become a channel for grace. Whether our medium for creativity is music, dance, visual arts or some other form of self expression, the creative process gives us a direct link to non-ordinary reality.

I recently read an article called The Alchemy of Art. The author suggested that even the act of contemplation while thinking about your creative process is opening us up to universal energy or power. This got me to thinking about my own process. When working on one of my masks, I often will sit in silence and just look at my piece of art in process. The time of contemplation is like an incubator for me. It is a beautiful time of quiet contemplation, of watering the seed of creativity.

I often ask my clients if they are being creative. It is essential to our well being to have a creative outlet. Cooking, gardening, sewing, these are all ways to express oneself. Even dressing a window for a retail space is an expression of creativity. When I ask this question of a client, I have often heard the answer, "I'm not an artist" or "I'm not very creative." This can't be further from the truth.

We are all creative beings. As Juan Jose Ruiz said at a presentation I attended.
We are all artists and we are all works of art. "

So the next time you pick up a shovel in the garden or a piece of jewelry to adorn yourself or paint on a canvas, remember that it is a sacred act. Everything we do through out the day has the potential for being a sacred act.
